11 track music album inspired by the novel, The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker
Released by Butterfly Effect – October 15th 2022
Following the success of their first album: The Gallows Pole, based on the novel of the same name by Benjamin Myers and soon to be a major BBC drama written and directed by Shane Meadows, the alt-folk group, The Shining Levels return with a full-length album inspired by the award-winning novel The Silence of the Girls by international bestselling author, Pat Barker.
In the novel, Pat Barker retells the events of Homer’s ‘The Iliad’, reframing the story using the voices of the women who, following the slaughter of their husbands and sons, were awarded as trophies to Achilles’ Greek army.
Their debut album The Gallows Pole drew influence not only from the story of 18th century counterfeiters in rural Yorkshire, but also the sprawling landscape they inhabited.
The Silence of the Girls, though a very different story, was equally inspiring to songwriters Davey J and Dan Coggins. The Silence of the Girls album got underway in 2019 while the group were still performing live events for The Gallows Pole but the rich well of material contained in Barker’s novel meant that many of the songs came quickly.
Due to the covid pandemic the band then had to record their individual parts separately before Dan assembled the album.
The album is released on Butterfly Effect, Limited edition vinyl, pressed by Press On Vinyl. CD, Digital download and streaming also available.
